Cold-like symptoms occur when undetected type-1 diabetes causes ketones to accumulate in the blood. This condition is known as diabetic ketoacidosis. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment to prevent further complications.

This type of diabetes  does not have any sudden symptoms,  but there are early signs, such as those mentioned earlier.

Diagnosis of type-2 diabetes may also be possible if some of the following symptoms are present:

  • Persistent infections  or an injury that does not heal or is a very long time to do so.
  • Problems associated with abnormal blood sugar levels over a long period of time, such as  numbness or a tingling sensation in the feet.

These symptoms  tend to develop over several years  and are very discreet and difficult to associate with the real disease.

Who is at risk for developing diabetes?

As mentioned earlier, diabetes can develop at any time. However, there are certain  risk factors for type-1 and type-2 diabetes.

What is seen persistently is not exclusive, as adults may end up having type-1 diabetes, although it is less common.

Type-1 diabetes:

  • Children

  • People with type 1 diabetes in the family

Type-2 diabetes:

  • Persons older than 45 years old
  • Obese people
  • People who lead a sedentary life
  • Smokers
  • People with type 2 diabetes in the family
  • High blood pressure
  • Abnormal levels of triglycerides or HDL

  • Previous insulin resistance

It is possible to have one or more of the warning signs  associated with diabetes. If this is the case for you, you should contact your doctor and have a time to be checked.

You may also end up detecting diabetes when you are checked for other illnesses or by a routine blood test.

In case you have type-2 diabetes, you can  control your blood sugar  with a special diet that will activate your insulin by itself, or take medication to do so.

Having diabetes does not mean that you can not have a normal and perfect life, but it does mean that  you should take better care of your health.
