Tips and recommendations for freezing broccoli

Brassicaceae, also known as the cruciferous family, are some of the healthiest vegetables in the world. This is because this group has a high content of fiber, antioxidants and flavonoids, which are essential for human health. Today we would like to tell you about one of them – broccoli – and answer a common question: Can you freeze broccoli?

Broccoli is both loved and hated. That is, some find it tasty, and others unappetizing. It contains nutrients that are essential for man, but its characteristic taste is not something for everyone. One of its benefits is how easy it is to store. Not to mention that it is available almost all year round in supermarkets.

How long can fresh broccoli last?

You may not know it yet, but a regular intake of broccoli is commonly associated with a lower risk of developing inflammation in the lungs. At least that’s how it is, according to a study published in  The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The good news is that you can buy it fresh and store it in the fridge for a while.

You can actually store it in the fridge for a period of up to 14 days if you store it raw. Its shelf life is reduced to 9 days if cooked. In any case, storage should be adequate, preferably covered if possible.

How to store broccoli properly

To maximize the shelf life of this vegetable, it is important to exercise simple caution when freezing it. As a rule, most producers wrap cruciferous vegetables in plastic or household film. We advise you not to remove it until you need to use it, as otherwise it will reduce its shelf life.

Likewise, store excess broccoli in a container and cover it to limit its contact with air if the package has already been opened. Then you should put it in the back of the fridge so that its flavonoids do not oxidize.

This is because these nutrients are effective in preventing several complex disorders. They have even been associated with a reduction in cellular damage due to aging and therefore also a delay in oncological development processes.

Can one freeze cooked broccoli?

As we mentioned above, one can definitely save cooked broccoli. To do this, store it in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It should be able to last for about nine days, even if the organoleptic trait deteriorates as time goes on.

This is why we recommend consuming it within 2-3 days after cooking. It is primarily because it will only retain its flavor during this period.

How to freeze broccoli?

Follow this procedure to blanch and store broccoli properly:

  • First, remove the leaves around it.
  • Then fill a saucepan with water and salt.
  • Cut the vegetable into pieces you deem appropriate.
  • Cook it for three minutes when the water starts to boil.
  • It must not cook for too long as it will lose its nutrients and vitamins.
  • Put the broccoli in a container of cold water to lower its temperature.
  • Finally, store it in the freezer either in an airtight container or in freezer bags.

You do not need to thaw the vegetable and can put it directly in the pot with water or on a frying pan to complete the preparation.
