Is it best to sleep on a full or empty stomach?

Some people think one should sleep on a full stomach. Others believe that it is much better to sleep on an empty stomach. This dilemma has created much debate, but in reality neither of the two extremes are particularly good alternatives. Find out why in this article.

Sleeping on an empty stomach: You should know that

Many people think that going to bed without eating anything is a good way to lose weight, but this is not true. It is necessary to have food in the stomach to get a good night’s sleep. There is nothing worse than being awakened by a stomach growling with hunger. It can prevent you from sleeping.

This false assumption is based on the idea that ” whatever you eat for dinner makes you fat,” and therefore some people think it is better to go to bed without eating anything. The problem is that the feeling of hunger will hit hard in the morning and will cause one to shave the fridge to find something delicious to eat. It can also risk hitting at night where one will wake up and eat a midnight snack, which is not good for the body as at this point one will usually choose to eat some leftovers or something deep fried instead of an apple.

Listen to your body

The body’s natural way of functioning can indicate what are the best habits to follow. Going to bed hungry is guaranteed to result in a night without sleep or with little and poor sleep. The next day, the consequences will be much worse than you can imagine, especially if you do it every day.

As is often said, it is never good to be too extreme. It is  recommended to eat and then let it go a few hours from the end of the evening meal until you go to bed. If it is already too late to eat dinner, one should not stop eating anything. Instead, one should go for a light meal, such as soup, yogurt with oatmeal, tea with a piece of bread or the like. Under no circumstances should one lie down to sleep on an empty stomach.

Science has spoken

According to studies, you should wait an hour and a half from eating to going to bed. This time can be spent, for example, washing up, reading, studying, watching a little television (but not too much), talking to your partner, cleaning up, cleaning, putting on clothes until the next day or whatever you need and fancy. It is best to eat dinner high in carbohydrates and protein. On the other hand, you should avoid saturated fat, as this slows down the digestion rate and can also result in flatulence and discomfort when trying to fall asleep.

sleep-3

If one day you come home late from school or work and ask yourself if you should eat dinner so late or if it is better just to persevere and go to bed upside down, then do not!  Never go to bed on an empty stomach, but eat a light meal instead. Scientific studies show that failing to eat before bedtime can result in sleep deprivation and problems rebuilding muscle mass at night.  Hunger causes the brain to be on guard,  resulting in sleep problems. If you do not get enough sleep, your metabolism slows down and the level of ghrelin increases. Ghrelin is a hormone that stimulates the appetite and makes the person wake up and eat without thinking about either the quality or the quantity of what one eats.

Going to bed hungry or going to bed on an empty stomach means that you sleep less and are bad if you want to build muscle mass. When the body is deprived of nutrients over an extended period of time, it breaks down the muscles to gain energy. If you want to lose weight, it is not a good idea to skip the evening meal.

Disadvantages of sleeping on a full stomach

Unlike those who swear to sleep on an empty stomach, there are some people who fill themselves with food at dinner and then go to bed with the feeling that they weigh five kilos more than normal. When one fills oneself with food, it accumulates in the stomach, which is the organ responsible for producing enzymes and acid to digest food. The blood flows directly to this area, which can result in feeling sleepy. However, one should  wait a while before going to bed.  If necessary, spend some time watching television or reading.  It is not so good to sleep on a full stomach if you have overeat at the same time.

Eating a lot and then going straight to bed not only results in becoming overweight. It can also create acidity which gives a burning sensation in the stomach, problems falling asleep, nightmares, etc. Keep in mind, however, that  it is not the dinner itself that makes you put on weight.  It depends on the quantity and quality of the food you eat in the evening. According to dietitians, it is best to stop eating carbohydrates at least four hours before going to bed and to wait at least two hours between dinner and bedtime.

Take care of your metabolism

Metabolism is slower in the evening and it takes longer to digest food. This results in flatulence due to the fact that the food is fermented to a greater extent in the intestines. It is necessary to relax after a meal, but it is not the same as sleep. And it’s not at all the same as sleeping on a full stomach. Sit comfortably on a sofa and have a conversation, read or watch television before bed.

Getting-off-to-sleep

According to experts,  there is also no problem in taking a bath after eating.  However, the water must not be too hot and you do not spend too much time in the bath. On the other hand, it is a bad idea to swim right after a big meal as it creates competition between the muscles of the digestive system and the other organs in terms of blood flow. This is the reason why one tends to get cramps in such situations.

Going to bed right after dinner, especially if you have eaten several dishes or if the food had a high content of calories and fat, it increases the possibility of heartburn, ie acid regurgitation. This makes it harder to fall asleep and generally causes sleep problems.  It is best to eat more fruits and vegetables and avoid sugar, fatty foods and flour.

So there are a lot of problems associated with sleeping on a full stomach. And if you finally have to sleep on a full stomach, eat a lighter meal.
