Swimming is one of the healthiest and most overall exercises you can do. It trains almost all the muscle groups of the body and it can also be an excellent and playful activity. Sharing moments with family and friends in the pool is an experience that will be remembered for a lifetime. In today’s article, we share some guidelines on how to teach your kids to swim.

Teach your children to swim without fear

The first obstacle you may come across when it comes to teaching your kids to swim is fear.

To overcome this, we suggest that you start getting them used to the water as early as possible. The goal is to normalize the situation so that their first encounter with the water is with their parents. This will help them build confidence so that they can relax and enjoy the activity.

One way to help your child feel safe is to first practice with very little water. Start out in a shallow pool where they can stand and not worry about sinking. It is also important that the water is warm because their skin is more sensitive and you want them to be physically comfortable.

With their parents by their side, they are ready to begin.

Breathing exercises in the bathtub can teach your child to swim

A bathtub at home is the ideal place for the first lessons on breathing. Hold their nose and blow bubbles underwater. This is a good start to get them breathing in and underwater.

The bathtub can also be the first place they dive their head under water and experience the sensation. A fun game might be to encourage them to find a toy in the bottom of the tub. Learning through play is always the best way to start a new activity.

However, you should never try to force your child to immerse his head under water. However, this training should be a natural and gradual process you do together step by step. Some children are better and less worried, while others a little more careful in the water.

In their own way, they can all become good swimmers if you just know how to respect and motivate them through their learning process.

Step by step into the pool

The first contact in the pool where you will teach your children to swim will probably be sitting on the edge where they will dangle their feet in the water. This will help your child get used to the water temperature and they can try to kick the water a little.

After a while,  you can persuade them to get in the water with you and keep them at all times and take them to a place where they can stand and hike or mushroom in the water.

One tip that has proven to be effective is to  minimize the use of liquid aids. These aids, e.g. bath wings or bath rings, typically create an addiction that is hard to break later. In addition, they give a false sense of buoyancy and safety while swimming.

The first movements when your child needs to learn to swim

Your child needs to understand that swimming is fun, so   never be angry if they do not want to perform one of the exercises. The first few times they are in the water, they must be presented with a game that suits their age and abilities.

  • Between the parents: Keep your child between two adults a short distance apart and gradually increase the distance as they swim back and forth between the two parents. Your child will instinctively start performing their first swim stroke.
  • Look for a win: Keep your child horizontal in the water. Encourage them to try to reach for a toy. You can start by placing the toys very close to them and gradually increasing the distance.
  • Airplane : Your child can hold his head up while stretching your arms like an airplane and letting them “fly” or soar through the water.

These tips and exercises should probably help your kids learn to swim so they can start enjoying this fun and healthy activity.
