Hunger and appetite are controlled by complex systems and can easily be affected by diet. Therefore, it makes sense that coffee also has something to say. Does the most popular beverage in the world really affect our hunger? Many people use  coffee to control their appetite . Coffee gives energy, and makes you more awake. It even improves your physical performance and then some believe that it suppresses the appetite. But is that now also true? Maybe coffee increases appetite? Find out here!

Coffee is a marvelous beverage with 1000 different components, of which caffeine is just one of them. Therefore, it is very exciting to examine what coffee does to the body, and especially what it does to the appetite. Appetite is in fact an expression of how hungry you feel, and it is controlled by hormones such as YY and GLP-1. In addition, it is interesting to look at whether coffee drinkers have a higher or lower actual energy intake than those who do not drink coffee.

There is no conclusive evidence as to whether coffee makes you hungry or not, but Matt Schubert, who researches the subject, believes that there is a link between coffee and satiety, instead of coffee increasing appetite.

Two cups of coffee gave Schubert’s subjects a feeling of satiety that those who drank decaffeinated coffee or no coffee at all did not experience.
In addition, the actual energy intake of those who drank coffee was 350 kJ lower than those who drank a placebo.

It could indicate that it is the caffeine itself that has this hunger-lowering property. Indeed, there were also some of the subjects who drank decaffeinated coffee, and their appetite and actual energy intake remained unchanged. However, according to Schubert, it is too early to draw conclusions.

It sounds like good news for weight loss, but before you head down to the nearest cafe to rinse your coffee down, remember that things like cappuccino and cafe latte are very fattening. There is no point in controlling your hunger with a calorie bomb.

It shows previous research:

  • Another experiment on caffeine showed that pure caffeine reduced energy intake by 22% half an hour later for men, but not for women.
  • Another study showed that coffee has no demonstrable effect within the first three hours. In turn, strong caffeinated coffee can reduce energy intake over an entire day for overweight people.
  • A third experiment did not examine energy intake, but instead found out. That caffeinated coffee reduced appetite and increased the level of the satiety hormone, YY.

It may be that caffeine affects the brain in the same way as dopamine and serotonin. These neurotransmitters are strongly linked to appetite, so it may be that coffee somehow shares the same connection. However, these are purely speculations so far. Hopefully the topic will be explored further in the future.

There are many other reasons to drink coffee, for example that coffee has a lot of antioxidants  that are good for your health. On the other hand, coffee is not a miracle cure. It’s a nice little addition to your diet, but it’s no use trusting that a cup of coffee is all it takes to stay healthy and shed those extra pounds.

There are also many other factors that control your feeling of hunger, for example if you skip breakfast, overeat, get bored or are anxious or stressed. The feeling of hunger is also controlled by hormonal changes in connection with, for example, pregnancy or menstruation.
